Let's reveal the secret of asparagus

The short asparagus season is upon us so let's be ready to take full advantage of it before they disappear again.

My favourite ones are the green asparagus as they require very little prep to reveal their full flavour and their goodness.

The best way to prepare them is simply to:

  1. trim the tough end, keeping only the spear and the soft green stalk;

  2. clean them quickly under cold water;

  3. and pan-fry them over medium heat with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt, covering with a lid and adding a bit of water if necessary.

It should take no longer than 3 to 5 mins depending on the size of the asparagus.

You can serve them just like that with a squeeze of lemon juice, with a few parmesan shaving or eggs. Simply gorgeous!

The advantage of such a quick cooking technique is that you preserve as much as possible all the nutrients of the asparagus. And there are many: Vitamin C and E, provitamin A, iron and magnesium.

It is rich in different types of fibres which will help with your gut health and your digestion.

It is also a good source of a particular flavonoid called quecertin that presents interesting anti-oxydant and anti-inflamatory functions. It could play a role in the prevention of certain types of cancers and cardovascular disease.

So, in a nutshell, there are loads of potential benefits in eating asparagus in addition to its amazing taste. Do not hold back!

Did you know ?

You might have notice that eating asparagus will have and effect on the smell of your urine. This is because of a sulphur compound called methanethiol that is produced after eating the vegetable... but by some eaters only. So not everyone will have a smelly urine after asparagus.

But this is not all. It turns that some people might produce the smell yet do not detect it! So if you think that asparagus has no effect on your urine smell, you can either be a non-detector or a non producer of that particular smell!
